NOVICE STAKE, BERELEIGH ESTATE 13/01/06
What a great day we had and our thanks once again to Bill and Phillipa Tyrwhitt-Drake for allowing us to hold another Trial at Bereleigh.
Nick Canter, the Bereleigh keeper along with his beaters showed some great birds, they were good humoured all day and could not have been more helpful with Nick ensuring the judges were getting the birds required. I had a lot of comments on ‘what a nice chap the keeper is’ and one comment saying ‘is that the same keeper as last year? and when I confirmed it was ‘he looks younger than I remember!!!’. Nick’s 18 month old cocker spaniel ‘Beetle’ received a special award by popular demand as the best cocker spaniel in the beat!
The guns including Roger Bacon, Mickey Stapleton, David Mann, Bob Butler, Philip Warnford and others as ever gave us their wholehearted support and enjoyed watching the dogs and choosing their ‘Guns Choice’.
Judges Barry Taylor, Ezio Venturi and Colin Pelham kept the day running smoothly; it was really nice to see Ezio back in action after his horrendous illness.
The atmosphere all day was almost ‘party-like’, everyone had a really enjoyable trial, competitors who were out of the trial very early in the day were given the option of going home but the all opted to stay for the duration which was really brilliant.
I was really pleased when so many club members came along to help, the committee members were as usual staunch in their support but we were joined by other club members Andy Robinson, Sara Miles, Heather Bradley, Keith Broomfield, Kate Bollen and Danny Burgess and I was extremely grateful for their help. It was also very gratifying to receive calls from other members offering help but sadly I had so many coming I did not need them on this occasion but please offer again it is always good to see new faces.
My thanks to all who contributed to make this a really happy end to the season; Nick, all the beaters, the guns, judges; Barry, Ezio & Colin, stewards; Sue Chapman, Heather Bradley & Romy Parsons, Michael Mullett for picking-up.
The beaters room for the prize giving was packed to the rafters and the occasion made even more memorable as Bill Tyrwhitt-Drake came along to present the prizes.
Amazingly all award winners were bitches, two of them just 18 months old.
Full results:
1st & Guns Choice NORLANDS PINTAIL Derek Buckland’s Labrador Bitch
2nd TUDORCOURT NIGHTINGALE Phil Hopper’s Labrador Bitch
3rd WINOKAPAU TIDE Henrik Vilandel’s Labrador Bitch
4th TURNERBROOK JAFFA Tony Turner’s Labrador Bitch
I received so many telephone calls, emails and letters regarding this trial, all with great comments and compliments including a card from Ezio Venturi and I quote: ‘I thoroughly enjoyed the day, the catering, stewarding and marking were first class, the guns were probably one of the best teams of guns I have ever seen. The keeper could not have been more accommodating and the standard of dog work was outstanding’. Praise indeed, well done everyone.
